Birch forest is not a great biome to start in. It's cold, so hypothermia is inevitable. Birch sticks aren't equivalent to sticks in the advanced crafting table, so you can't use them for stone tools. (I know you can convert sticks, but it's tripping people up.) Cows don't spawn there so there's no source of leather, which is critical.
Most new players seem to be having trouble figuring out the early basics, like how to make the advanced crafting table and the path to stone tools. A guide or something would help. It would also help a LOT if all the early tools could substitute string for leather straps. Right now the flint hatchet does not.
BetterGeo could use some documentation too. I just managed to smelt iron but it's because I got lucky and stumbled on an ore-bearing stone.

Thanks for the feedback.
A few things:
Don't worry too much about EnviroMine's temperature right now. I know it's in dire need of configuration, but that's a major task on its own, and I'll be making changes throughout future updates to make it more manageable. For now, everyone on the test server has access to creative mode, so just grab a bucket of lava or cold water to bring temps back to the 37C range.
Ok, so, for Better Beginnings stuff - there's some brick walls people are hitting, and I've taken note. BB currently doesn't support Minetweaker, but it WILL be getting MT support in a future update. Until then, I can't do much about the stick issue. Both birch and vanilla sticks are registered with oreDict values, so BB is the culprit and not using stick oreDicts for its recipes. Once BB gets MT support, I'll be able to fix this.
As for cows, leather and bones, I'll be making changes to this as well. For the hatchet, I'll add string as an alternative option to leather strips. Once BB gets support, I'll add string to advanced recipes that use leather as well, as long as it makes sense.
Bones are rare, but I'll be changing a config option so they drop from ALL animals.
BetterGeo - ok, so, world gen on the test server got screwed up due to the pregen mod I used. So, for the first 100 chunks out any direction from spawn, you will only find stone underground. This isn't supposed to happen, though. In fact, there's not supposed to be ANY stone underground, but instead, a bunch of custom geology from BetterGeo.
I'll see if I can fix this for the next map reset, but for now, go out 100 chunks and you'll start seeing "normal" world gen. Normal meaning that, in your example, iron ore should be EASY to find as banded iron formations underground.
